How the midpoint is calculated
The calculator converts both places to points on a sphere and takes the point halfway along the great circle that joins them. That is the midpoint of the shortest possible path, the one long-haul flights approximate. It is not the average of the two latitudes and longitudes, which is what many simple tools return and which can be thousands of kilometres off for long routes.
